So what's the history of the term "strip-planked" for our canoes and kayaks, and how did the estimable Mr. Schade come to switch to it? Was it simply to differentiate the new book from the previous work, or is there something deeper going on here?

I was going to call my last book "Building Strip Built Boats" but the editors didn't like the use of "building/built" feeling it was redundant. I griped about "Strip-Planked" at the time because I used "strip-built" throughout the interior of the book. The editors were insistent. I relented.

When Ted Moores retired from teaching at the WoodenBoat School he was teaching "strip-planked" construction and I took over his class, so I kept that formulation. If it is good enough for Ted, its good enough for me.

I believe I remember reading in one of Ted's books that he didn't like the term "strip-built" because there were canoes built in Peterborough Ontario that were strip built before there was glass and epoxy. I believe he was advocating for something like wood-strip/epoxy or something like that.

So the options are: strip-built, wood strip, cedar strip, wood-strip-epoxy, strip-planked, wood-covered-with-glop. I don't know what is correct, but it is the English language, if you use a word long enough it becomes correct.
