Here is a method I use with good success:

When you put your patch and epoxy on, try using a piece of a gallon size clear plastic bag over top of it.
If smoothed with a credit card (one of the fake ones they send with junk mail works perfectly) runs are contained and the resulting surface is quite smooth.
Be careful not to have wrinkles or creases in the portion of the bag you use and mind the white label is not paint size down and the paint will remain. Yes, I do know this from experience.
