Thanks!

What you describe sounds like what happened; the board I bought at the lumber wholesaler's was very straight, dry, and fine-grained; I looked at a lot of boards. But we had a lot of rain right after I bought it, and I didn't clamp it between planing sessions. That said, the arc doesn't really hurt--it almost looks like it was intentional. I don't notice it while paddling.

Appreciate the info on the plane and epoxy as well. I didn't get a ton on my hands, but it doesn't take much to be messy and annoying. I don't keep turpentine or paint thinner around, so I used Citri-strip (citrus-based paint remover) and then soap/water to remove it.

What's funny is that my initial test of white art acrylic and 655 on a small piece of cedar worked fine; a thin layer is now (10 days later) hard as a rock. The problem was that when I applied it to the paddle, I put it on too thick.

A crazier idea I had (idea stage only) was to attempt something like the abalone inlays you see on fine guitars. If one could get enough pieces of mother-of-pearl and had the time to embed them around the edge (using maybe Gorilla Glue), that would be a pretty solution. Not sure how long they would last if struck, though.

I've now sanded down the loom to make it wider. Feels a lot more comfortable.
