I have never built commercially, but I suspect that the more unusual boats may have a better chance of getting decent prices. Custom racing boats, or boats that you simply cannot buy from mass market outlets, such as baidarkas or radical rolling boats.

If I was to build commercially I would probably go for Baidarkas. They are different enough, and behave differently enough, that they may find a niche sale now and then form people looking for a different feel.

I think that part of the problem with selling home made boats, is that they are home made. Most people have no idea how durable and seaworthy they actually are, and possibly have more confidence in something out of a factory. Also, the build quality may vary a lot. Folks don't want to buy a pig in a poke, even if they run the risk of missing out on a really good pig. They just don't want to take the risk.

My guess, if you want to get really good prices for home made kayaks, then move to Nice, or Lake Como, or one of the posh Swiss lakes. If the build quality was top notch, and the look elegant, you could probably name your price, but don't expect the boat ever to be used. like the Riva launch in the harbour, it will mostly be a bauble to be admired.
