That's a lot of good ideas and clever ways to make a strong back. Thanks for all feedback.

After building a couple of kayaks with the internal strongback, I built a canoe with a simple external strongback and I will never go back to the internal. An external strongback just has to be stiff enough to hold its shape, any adjustments to the forms can be made with the stand offs in order to create the skeleton 'in space'. A ladder with a plank secured to the rungs will serve the purpose and then be repurposed afterwards.
