I priced a 2x4 aluminum piece and it was $200 without the extra sleeves.

Plywood was a single sheet (non marine) at about $20. Of course there was a bit of work to cut and assemble the pieces. As much as I would like to try the aluminum its a lot more expensive, and many designs do not use the same frame spacing as Nick (for making the sleeves.

Aluminum would probably be more pleasant and less droopy than ply, I'm just too cheap.
