I'm pretty sure the recesses ARE a pain no matter how you make them! ;)
If you use the templates make sure you use quality, thin plywood (3mm okoume) for the rims. I would also recommend printing an extra set of the rim parts. The bending stresses are pretty extreme. You might break a couple parts learning the ropes.
