Epoxy: fill coat

helping a first time builder and taking a look at some of the technics for using epoxy,
I have a question for some of the builders on here about the first fill coat.

one way to put the first fill coat on after wetting out glass is to wait about five
hours and do it then. is this the best way ?

what if you can't get to it until the next day after the wet out coat has cured ? you can't
sand the surface because the glass is proud. what I’ve done is to wash the surface with water,
using a brush and go over it lightly with a scotch bright pad. also, wipe it with alcohol.

this has always been kind of a grey area for me and I’m really wondering how to deal with this.
any help would be much appreciated.

thanks,
