Car hinges are not a good comparison.
Car hinges are custom made for each model, with the hinge interface built to fit the curved surfaces discussed.

The important point is that the hinge pins have to be parallel to each other and in line or the hinge action will bind as the lid moves.

The hinge interface custom made to fit the curved opening is the same effect as making the mounting points flat as stated before.
