Let them soak in vinegar, old plastic coffee can about 2/3 full with a top on it. Can't use steel cans the vinegar eats them. After soaking for a day, they are fairly easy to clean with a bristle brush, soap and water.

Tooth rollers (usually don't have teeth, some do) are great for getting rid of trapped air.
