Not getting a complete coat of glass leaves a soft spot (spots) exactly where you will hit things.

I.E., you will loose the strength exactly where you need it.

It takes little to sand the glass down to leave a smooth transition to wood and then add it back. A nice even splice in the two coats of glass is easier to avoid differences in look.
