Strip: bulkheads need to be vertical

I'm making wooden bulkheads and in the process of fine-fitting right now. Is it important to make them exactly vertical? Does anyone really make a pinhole for pressure? I made flush, cut out deck hatches with internal bungees - planning on using D-cross section weather stripping. Thanks!
