John,

Do you have a picture record of one of your builds?
I tried a section of a boat (4' of a nose) and was not happy with gluing up after stripping. I didn't seem to fill in the gaps very well and it looked like a lots of fairing while cutting thru a complete coat of epoxy.

I was also not really looking to paint a boat, yet.

Any pointers?

I found some of the same results as you- some gaps needed filling, and cutting through epoxy to sand/fair is a lot of work.
When prepping for paint, IMO it's not necessary (or preferable) to cut back to the bare wood.
I don't have many pictures to show; sorry. Nothing with details of the epoxy filling/stapling 'before and after'.
Here's one of the Panthera with the deck stapled:

Here's a shot of my Frej build with the deck filled and faired (I tint the epoxy with System three resin pigments or iron oxide for black sections) when getting ready to start working on the hatch and coaming recesses:

I wouldn't recommend the 'square strips stapled dry and epoxy after' method for a wood-look hull. As Ron points out, sanding is more difficult and a lot of epoxy and sandpaper is wasted getting back to a uniform open-pored wood surface.

It would be easy to put extra weight into the boat with excessive epoxy/fairing compound if the desire for a 'car finish' surface got out of control. :-)
