Trying to identify the name/type of wood Kayak 18' tip to tip that I just picked up. I want to restore it, but need some advice. Came with a new Sawyer wood paddle and the Kayak for $40.
Haven't water tested yet, but its in really good condition and I think it water tight, just need some TLC on wood surface. Would love to confer with someone that may know the type is, and process to make it beautiful once again.
I have pics, but don't know how to post on string...
please help.
Donald

Hi Donald, sounds like a great deal.
Obviously, pictures are essential for id purposes or thousands of words...so:Is it plywood stitch and glue or made out of strips of wood.,how heavy is it?How wide at the widest point?Detail will narrow ID down? Can you see if there is any glass fibre weave on the surfaces, inside and out?Has the kayak been neglected resulting in sun damage?what are the main damage ,cosmetic concerns?
Get it wet and observe how the wood appears,it might be just a matter of sanding to create a key for a finishing coating with Marine varnish.I'm no expert on Id but restoration is a continual up skilling process.
Making it "beautiful" again will be a rewarding process and most likely, not too difficult. All the best from Paul.
