Bill is pretty good at keeping the cost down but don't forget the oar cost in addition to the rig.

I was just going to split my kayak paddle in half and use those. No good?

;-)

I would rent a sculling rig just to find out if you like it. If you like it a little I would build a set of hollow oars (plenty of plans available). I have a double sculling wherry and I am making the second frame from an old row exercise machine I picked up for $10. I think my chances are less than 50% at sticking with rowing. If I get past the (this is not fun) stage I may invest in the do it yourself model that Bill suggested.

Thanks--good idea. I did do a pretty good amount of rowing of skiffs and dinghys as a kid in Boy Scouts (and even taught the merit badge one summer)--but I'm sure it's a lot different in a boat that's thrice the length, half the width, and half the weight.

Bottom line is you may just be digging a deeper hole and it may be better to cut your losses. I am one of those fools that like trying new things so I justify the cost just for the learning experience. To me the advantage of rowing is you go 50% faster and burn twice the calories.

Speed and the chance to burn off more man-blubber? You're speaking my language! The only thing I recall not liking is not seeing where I'm going. I'm sort of looking forward to doing something with this boat--so maybe I'll try the rowing conversion if I can find a good used rig or make one, as you did. However, I might first create a simple buoyancy outrigger. I might add some weight to the hull as well--though this boat has a sealed bulkhead in each end--so it would have to be in the cockpit.

If I want a gym experience on the water it is tempting. The disadvantages are many, looking at where you have been, bigger more awkward boat to car top and store along with the oars, very limited use, a lot more involved set up to get the angles and distances correct (I like this part). This is a different world than your Coho. I would even argue that getting a good road bike and motoring around is more similar to your Coho experience than a rowing frame is.

Interesting. I do have to cartop any boat, as I don't have a trailer and don't want to deal with the hassle of registering one where I live.

Whatever I do, I will keep everyone posted.
