Why bother with sponsons? Paddle that when you want to do a workout and go fast. Paddle your Coho when you want to float.

That had sort of been my tentative plan a couple of days ago--but then I realized 1) the pond is so topographically uninteresting and 2) getting the boat/gear loaded and unloaded is so time-consuming that I probably won't use the boat that way. If I lived right on some small pond or lake, maybe.

Until reading Nick's reply below, I had thought the pontoon idea would work. But apparently I don't understand buoyancy very well.

Honestly, I guess I just got boat greed. So now I have to figure out if I can adapt this boat to a large, lake-like river OR if I should just cut my losses and resell her, either as-is or after fixing her up a little with epoxy glue and varnish.

(BTW, the Coho is pretty fast compared to most kayaks out on the river here. Surely slower than a glass/carbon boat, but it feels fast to me, having previously paddled only plastic 12' kayaks and Grumman camp canoes.)
