Never occurred to me to wear street shoes in a kayak.

If you mean sneakers or something with a harder insole (street shoes), a few experiences with the piles of sharp rocks and mussels/shells that pass for 'beaches' some places up here (BC) would soon put that thought in your mind!
;-)

My current favourites are UnderArmour Speedform Apollo shoes -light and dry quickly, but good enough for walking on rocks and wearing around camp.
