Strip: Which varnish or wax?

I just re did the glass work on a canoe build in 1973 for a fellow who wanted to take his father (the builder) for one last paddle in his boat. I have built a few strip kayaks now but have always used automotive clear coat as the protectant for the epoxy. This fellow does not want the cost of this and is in need of an alternative.
I used 3.2 oz thayercraft 1687 (2 layers) with system three silver tip and slow hardener.
He was told at a local body shop supply that they had a really good boat wax that would be good, though again I don't know the ins and outs of anything other than auto clear?

Advice???

Thx
daveg.
