Just remember that the varnish has to be completely dry before you polish, this can take a while if you've added several layers of varnish in a short period of time. A while being several days to weeks. If it's not completely dry the polisher will make a mess rather than polish the surface.

Also, any of the 'spar' -type varnishes will be soft - they are formulated to stay 'elastic' so trying to polish them will be frustrating. I've never had a lot of luck polishing out varnish; instead I waited for a while (weeks/months) and then fine (wet) sanded the varnish and put on a thin careful coat to restore the gloss.
