The beauty of homemade foam seat is they get you as close to the hull as possible while giving support, if done right.
I don't want to distort my butt every time I paddle and a flat foam pad does not give support all around.
That wood seat above is really funny. Is it used? Must get some laughs and looks.

I have had some where the contacting lower part was paper thin. Think of the wood seat shown above only carved out of foam. There are videos around showing how to make them.
All that contact does tend to lock your butt down and you have to work harder at rotation. I would like to find a durable slippery fabric that would laminate down to the foam.
