I always transport with the boat right side up. This is my solution to short rack spacing. It is cheap, and You can make it as long as you like. There are rubber door stoppers screwed in underneath spaced so that they are just outside of the roof bars, to stop the whole lot from sliding off.

I have also used half of an aliminium extension ladder in the past to the same effect.
