I would agree with Mike, if you were using a specialty "soft" backing pad, one you would purposely buy as an extra item, it could be a problem.

If however you are using the medium firm backing pad typically supplied with most ROSers you can create a perfectly fair surface if you follow my detailed suggestions @ http://www.laughingloon.com/sanding.html

Many people do have problems with bubble creation when using a foam roller. This is because they start with a dry roller cover full of air.

If you pour the mixed resin over the roller cover in the roller tray BEFORE you start to use it, giving the roller cover a few seconds to absorb the resin, few if any bubbles will be created. You may notice the roller cover turn darker as the resin is absorbed.

Any bubbles left are broken when the surface is "tipped off" by going over the same surface with a 4" foam brush. This has the added advantage of catching any thin or running spots resulting in a more even coating.

Some epoxies like MAS are more prone to creating bubbles and cure to a rougher surface.
