It's interesting to see the various opinions on what is considered good wood. In his book, Cunningham advises against WRC but seems to suggest that pine, yellow cedar or fir are good choices for the gunwales and deck beams, but not the ribs. I have two 20' fir 2x4s which I will be using for gunwales and to the extent that there is any left over, for deck beams. I can certainly get shorter lengths for the deck beams if needed, or I can use clear pine. I also have a nice hunk of 8/4 ash that i can make quite a few ribs from. I suppose it is also a function of how well pieces fit together and how much forcing has to be done.

One question i have is I've noticed that builders have used the jointer to thin the ribs by 1/16 on each side to facilitate the bending and get it down to 1/4 for the mortise. Given that you are working with relatively thin and narrow stock to begin with (5/16x7/8) are you experiencing tearout or splintering when you flip the rib around and go in against the grain? Has anyone used a router table instead?

Thanks,
Gero
