Hi B,

The reason I use a hinge is so that the cable is not required to bend. All the bending is taken up by the hinge. This really eliminates the potential for the skeg wire to kink, even it you hit a rock.

Also, a foiled skeg will get a 90 degree rotation with less than two inches of cable movement. 90 degrees is less than you need for full optimal deployment, so the control box can be quite short.

The flat end of the hinge arrangement is morticed into the skeg itself, and the rounded end accepts the cable. There is a tool for constricting the fitting down onto the cable, but I just slide it over the cable and squeeze it in the vice. The item is called a swaged terminal end.
