I've got both the large and smaller, regular size Veritas spokeshaves. I've used the regular size a lot. It is a very nice tool. I've also used the similar form Stanley and a Stanley knock-off. I was happy with these, but the Veritas is a more solid tool and works like a charm straight from the box.

I just bought the large version after using one at the WoodenBoat School while shaping canoe stems. It is the Crocodile Dundee Spokeshave. I was able to shape some heavy hardwood very quickly and it can be adjusted for a fine shave.

I have not tried the Lie Nielsen version. I'm sure it is a well made tool, but I do appreciate the adjustment thumbscrews on the Veritas tool. It makes adjustment very easy.

I use the regular size Veritas when making paddles. It is very useful for shaping. The larger version would work great, but may be overkill.
