Etienne's method of covering the deck after joining it to the hull also eliminates the need for additional fiberglassing of the hull/deck joint. Removing an extra step and additional weight, beautiful. Bob

True, Bob. I've used this method on a few kayaks. It's even used on many plywood kits including my plywood Black Pearls. It's nice not having to feather one edge of glass on the exterior joint. In the grand scheme though it's a minor time saver.

You really need to think about the build steps that follow and make sure they will still work. Once you bond the deck to the hull you lose all of your easy access to the interior. Some methods for making deck fittings, hatch systems and cockpits don't work as well or at all.

Take flush wooden hatches: You can only cut the hatches out after you glass the deck exterior. They won't hold their shape well with glass on only one side. So unless you use sheer clamps, all your interior seam work will be done through the cockpit, especially if you bond your bulkheads in place prior to mating. It's also a little trickier forming and bonding carbon hatch sills to the inside of the deck.

Also, unless you use surface mounted deck fittings, most (if not all) of them need to be installed prior to mating to the hull. You won't be able to reach and ones in the ends.
