In my experience, the dots of hot glue method is vastly superior with no disadvantages at all.

I agree with the first part of that statement, but I need to point out a reason to be careful about the second part. Instead of using glass tape, I bias-cut strips from those "useless triangles" of leftover fiberglass someone mentioned a few days ago. Hey - bias cut is great for non-flat surfaces. Why not use it for everything? For every question, there is an answer. Bias cut glass can easily be stretched in one dimension, with a corresponding shrinkage in the perpendicular dimension. The problem with that in this application is that if you tack it with hot melt glue, say every six inches, the glass will not necessarily lie flat between dots of glue. As you brush the epoxy on the glass the glass will stretch a little until your brush reaches the next dot of glue, where it stops stretching. The same thing will happen between every two dots of glue, resulting in small folds of fiberglass every six inches.

If you are doing this because it simplifies the process while working in the limited access area inside the kayak's sheer just wait until you try to get rid of those folds. Of course, this issue can be avoided by using actual glass tape, or by cutting the glass cloth along the strands. I know that NOW, and so do you. I hope I helped.
