Not doing much???

Typical. There have only been thousands of kayaks built with 0, 90 single ply. I suppose those didn't work?

I'm sure they weren't the maximum strength, but they certainly worked, and well.

If you really want to get carried away, cloth is a lot less strong and stiff than unidirectional. Why don't you find a really light unidirectional S-2 glass, lay it up using a vacuum bag layup (with a bleeder cloth), test to see the strongest orientation in a typical cedar strip construction, then declare that to be "best"?

Of course it will be so thin that it will have little abrasion resistance, so maybe "best" depends upon what you imagine the failure is going to be.

I'm not suggesting there are no improvements over 0, 90 single ply cloth, but lets actually talk about what meets your particular needs in an overall sense.
Anything that starts with "I guess" might be suspect.

Anything that starts with "the Gougeons tested" I'm willing to believe when I read the report.

I'd like to hear the justification for +/- 33 degrees - I think that 27.8 degrees would be better - totally unjustified of course.
