The socks hold up pretty well, but you really do not want to leave a carpeted area without shoes on over them. The socks are like the rest of the suit, they have no insulation, so you'll need to wear something waterproof and warm. Cold feet isn't fun and sandals for me don't protect the socks well enough. If you cut the socks, the suit will fill with water, defeats it's purpose.

Oh yeah, socks usually are WAY over sized to fit most everyone that buys the suit, so unless you've got like size 15 feet, they'll be pretty floppy. So the booties you buy need to be sized to fit sloppy socks and not be uncomfy.
