I don't agree that a dry suit is your best choice for cold weather wear.
Here in Maine we surf year round in wetsuits and in the winter the water gets down to the low to mid 30sF (1-2C)

Also, if your dry suit tears or a seal or gasket fails while you are in the water, you are now wearing a very cold anchor. If your wetsuit tears on something or you somehow manage to put a hole in it.....it just keeps on working the way it was intended to.

I do agree that a farmer John (Jane) should not be one's first choice for cold water anything. I think it's also important to remember to cover as much as possible if you are going to venture into cold water. Gloves and booties are obvious but remember to cover your melon! An integrated hood or beanie is a must!

I think there is a widespread perception that wetsuits are uncomfortable. Anyone that says that has not tried on a decent wetsuit in the last 10 years. The Patagonia R3 or R4 are a good example. Lined with a merino wool lining they are absolutely luxe. Warm as toast fit like a dream and comfortable. All for a fraction of the price of a dry suit.

As a matter of fact you can go to cleanlinesurf.com or a dozen other places just like it and pick up a top of the line 5-4 or 4-3 full steamer like the Rip Curl F Bomb or E Bomb for 300-400 USD
