I have a friend of mine, (high ranking BCU instructor - don't want to post names) who lives on an inland marsh stream. He was trying out a boat and took a paddle up the stream in winter with street clothes and boots. He got out to adjust the seat band, slipped in the mud and went in. No back up anything in the boat. He told me his heart was pounding and he was gasping for breath. The pain was excruciating and his skin felt like it was on fire. all his clothes were soaking wet. And his 1/4 mile paddle back was torture and he could hardly hold the paddle.

So, if anyone thinks being close to shore when the water is frigid is a safety blanket, think again. If you're going to do that, carry a complete set of dry back up clothes and heat packs.
