Hypothermia isn't the only issue, there is a thing called cold shock where you enter really cold water and have a gasp reflex, you can then very quickly get hypothermia since you've sucked in big quantities of very cold water, or you may just drown. Paddling in very cold water is risky.

Btw, the dry suit alone has no insulating value at all, you'll stay dry and still freeze to death if you're in the water wearing one. Synthetic top and pants or union suit will be required to offer some insulation under the dry suit. It gets cold surprisingly quickly. A couple years ago our club helped the local dealer who's demo boats ending up in the water after it started freezing. Getting them out of the water being only waist deep and wearing a dry suit taught you very quickly how little insulation these things have.
