a paddle suit may be an option to consider. kokotak makes a model that is relatively inexpensive compared to their top-of-the-line dry suits. it has most of the key properties of a dry suit other than in the case of total imersion where it does not have a water-tight neck gasket.

it really depends on air temps and water temps and where you are paddling and the kinds of risks you expose yourself to that impact this equation.

for example, in winter, i tend to restrict myself to paddling along a walk-outable shore line (e.g. no more than 30 feet from a shore) and calm surface and wind conditions.....no open bay passages for me for the winter. i also, during the winter, will not paddle alone and make sure both me and my colleague have water-proof working marine radios and cell-phones.

there is a lot of good literature on sorting out the approach and winter can offer up pretty varied water and wind conditions. it is possible, in my view, to get in a reasonable amount of winter season work (with mother nature's cooperation) with alternatives short of a dry suit. but without some assumptions about what winter means to you.....and what you want to paddle in.....its hard to make a real proposal.

all that said....i have a dry suit. i shopped around and found a good quality suit on clearance at the end of the season. if you buy a good piece of equipment and treat it right...they can last a very long time.
