it was a bit complicated.....and there was probably an easier way.

i built the hull and deck with red cedar and the yellow cedar (the strip) was the top-most piece (shearline) on the hull section.

everything was sanded and prepped. i then fineline taped the strip so that i could epoxy coat just the yellow cedar strip. i coated the yellow cedar strip with epoxy. and when that cured removed the tape and retaped the strip covering the now-epoxied yellow cedar. i then stained the red cedar portion of the hull and put a seal coat of epoxy over the stain. i then removed the fine-line tape and i had a pretty clean yellow strip. there were a couple areas where stain got through the tape....but not into the yellow cedar....just on top of the epoxy that was already cured on the yellow cedar and i cleaned it up with a scotch pad.

i stained the deck (while the hull and deck sections were still seperate) and seal coated the deck. i then glassed the deck and hull and basically everything was now nicely locked in.

an alternative approach would be to have left the yellow cedar strip not glued to the hull or deck....and simply do the final attachment with woodglue of that strip after the hull and deck were stained, built and glassed . the glass tape/strip joining the hull and deck inside/outside would then lock in/waterproof the final unsealed strip....and you would not have to do all the back and forth with the fine-line tape plus little clean-up activity.
