I have a kayak for sale, but I'm beginning to think that it might be easier to donate it for the tax deduction. has anyone here ever done this? Thanks.

If you HAVE to get rid of the kayak it IS a good way to help a local charity. I did the exact thing this past winter. I designed and built a SOF for our local XC ski club. We auctioned it off at our annual dinner/dance fundraiser. I think they made about $2000 off it. For tax purposes just write up an invoice with an estimated price and have them sign it.
