I agree, it's a problem with sanding. There are solutions though, one is to use course steel wool (or better bronze wood, it doesn't rust), the edges of the wool cut the wood fibers off, of course this needs done by hand. Another way is to use a cabinet scraper, does the same thing but leaves a nicer finish.
