Varnish isn't a one time and forget it job. It needs to be refreshed occasionally. With a boat stored inside and keep out of UV light (including florescent lights) it'll go for 2 or 3 years before it needs work. If it's stored outside it'll need re-coated every year. Do that and the varnish should last for a really long time, 10 or 15 years before it needs stripped and redone.
