To those of you who have made a few of these boats - I'm assuming that when the strips are being cut, that the fence is set to a 1/4" cut (or however thick you want the strips) and that you're pulling them out on the back side once you feed the end of the board through the saw

Yes on the fence fixed position. And, always with a short auxiliary rip fence in place.
Pushing the strips on to the outfeed table with good shove with a long push stick is the way I do it, not pulling. But, yes, the strips do need to be cleared off the outfeed table from time to time. I don't want loose strips anywhere near the back side of the blade (a.k.a. launching zone ).

I did rip some strips from some better-quality 2x4 lumber recently, making a 'mockup' of the kayak stern for experimenting with rudder ideas. It goes pretty quickly, but as mentioned, 8/4 stock usually sells at a premium.

I notice my local specialty lumber dealer is selling WRC B&C strips for 50 cents a linear foot. (!!) That may help to put the work of ripping strips (even though not B&C) into perspective. At that dealer, clear WRC is $8 (and up) per b.f.. (lengths to 20')
