Part of the issue is is I have a dinky table saw - one of those Bosch jobsite saws...it's decent enough and since there's a Diablo blade on there anyway - it doesn't need to do much more.

That saw should work fine with the right tables.
Folks have cut strips with Skilsaws with base guides and also with Skilsaws mounted upside down, hanging from a table. You don't need a 'cabinetmaker' saw for ripping - most of them are designed to crosscut well, not rip. (The saw tables get wider, not a lot longer, as the saws get more expensive.)
