The suggestion of an overlay (not sure if it was serious) is something I am still considering also I have a pile of scrap veneers I can use.

Yes, I was entirely serious.

I've done this a number of times.

I had a North Star returned with a broken nose. I told him not to wax the boat. It slid off his SUV roof racks onto the pavement.

The nose fix was easy but, the scar left was not pretty. I couldn't send it back looking ugly so, I made it a "design feature" and covered the scar with dolphins and sea turtles. Got me to buy and use a wood burning tool set.

I had some strips that were short on the back deck of a kayak and didn't reach the cockpit opening. I added some short strips and put a half moon veneer of flame maple over it.

My next customer requested this "feature".

One never stops making mistakes. You just get better at hiding them!
