Many many years ago I made a couple of very long canoe trips with my dad and his best friend and son in a couple of canoes. That friend's son is now my brother in law.

This was the era of wood canvas canoes and canvas packs, fun with 90 lb. canoes and 90 lb. packs on some of those portages. Luckily we never dumped a canoe, but ended up helping a couple of guys who's canoe got away from them in a set of rapids that we portaged around (they didn't, I'm sure wished they had).
