Personally if you decide to make the change, I would find it easier to remake the whole deck.

If you wish to make a change, there's no rule that says the crossing strips must be horizontal . . . so you could just break (or wet) off the front 1/3 or 1/2 of the crossing strips and reglue to achieve more acceptable clearances.
