Yep, the vacuum press is Joe's Woodworker's design. I bought a refurbished vacuum pump from him and all of the brass fittings. I should have also bought the schedule 40 PVC from him because I had a really hard time finding that. The local Home Depot and Lowes aren't going to carry it. I ended up driving across town and buying a 20' pipe, which I cut into two 3' sections in their storage lot (with their permission). The guy even rotated the pipe while I held a cordless Dewalt circular saw up to cut it. In the end we were both covered head to tow in white PVC shavings, but he didn't seem to mind. I think he was more amused by the idea of someone building their own vacuum press. After showing pics of the kayak on my cell he was more than willing to help out.

His site has a gallery of customer builds. I copied one that I saw there and painted the PVC red and the wood black to match the Porter Cable pancake compressor.

I love it. One day I'd like to create a mold and use it to make carbon fiber greenland paddles.
