Depending on which direction you view the strips from the Spanish Cedar either looks really dark like Cherry or really glimmers as it reflects the light. Had I known this I probably would of put a lot more effort into book matching the strips or at least making sure that the grain was always running in the same direction. But I'm happy with the final effect. And more importantly the wife loves it. It's her boat anyway.

It's a lot more uniform in appearance compared to Western Red Cedar. It's not really Cedar at all, but closer to the Mahogany family. It's definitely harder than WRC and Basswood. A bit harder to bevel the edges with a hand plane unless you have the grain going in the right direction. I'm sure it's going to be a bit heavier as well. We'll have to see how this affects the final weight of the boat.

Unlike Basswood, the Spanish Cedar is so dark that staple holes don't show very much at all. You really have to get close and look for them.
