I have built kayak with lashings and also with glued and screwed joints. I prefer lashing, but glued and screwed was much faster, especially on a multi-chined boat. For a kids boat that will be quickly outgrown I will glue and screw the frame and use cheap canvas and latex paint. For a boat that will get hard use or will be used for many years I will lash the frame skin it with nylon and use two-part urethane coating. I use different methods and materials for different purposes.
