Hi Nick,
I was hoping you'd chime in on this subject. The hull speed formula will still work with kayaks, assuming someone would take the time to come up with an accurate multiplier for that formula. The "1.34" number was derived experimentally with sailboat hulls I think in the late 1800's, so it's not real accurate for comparison with boats as narrow as a kayak. This doesn't mean that if we had an accurate multiplier that the formula would be less useful than the original is for large sailboat hull comparisons.
There is a similar problem with the multiplier in comparing multihull sailboats.
If you paddle a hull that's near it's actual hull speed you can actually feel that you're reaching it's limit when the bow raises and the stern sinks. Just don't make enough power to push it up over the bow wave and get it onto a plane.
