Well it is not wise to have the rudder blade not strong enough to resist the sidewards pressure of the waves to prevent weather cocking. The blade moves upwards when hitting a rock when you move forwoard. When there is the possibility to hit things on the bottom of the water you have to pull it up.
One layer off glass was not enough. May be two layers is but I wanted to be sure and made three layers.
On the Night Heron the hinge is rather high above the water so the rudder blade has to be rather long and that gives high tension just under the pulling system. The stern stem is very strong. May be the hinge will break out some tme but that will easy be repaired.
