The 1/2 round part's length, radius + depth combined with ball diameter are DESIGNED to and INTENDED to put some arch in cable it as created by the ball ... This is the friction that holds the skeg adjustment in place. Deck thickness was factored in as well. If you make one from wood, I suggest the same dimensions.

Bob astutely noticed and modified the ball to work the way he wanted. No worries.
