Strip: Texas Water Safari boat

I enjoyed watching the Texas Water Safari race this past weekend and hope someday to participate. I have plans for a cedar strip canoe that I would use for this race (and others) and I am wondering about what sort of layup may be most appropriate for such a boat. The purpose built safari boats use very heavy layups of carbon and kevlar for extreme impact resistance.

My current thoughts range from as simple as an extra layer of FG in the "football", to a double layers of kevlar, etc...

The primary goal is higher than normal impact resistance, so any and all suggestions are welcome :)
