Epoxy: sticky surfboard

A question for the collective knowledge base here.

My 15 year old neighbor has been making and repairing surfboards for a while now and asked an interesting question.
"Is there something that can be added to epoxy that will leave a sticky surface so that you don't have to wax your surfboard"

For those that may not be familiar with surfing; the top of your board is generally waxed to make it more grippy underfoot.
One's first thought may be to add something gritty, like sand, but that would shred your wetsuit or rash guard in short order.
Ideally it would be sticky, or grippy, even when wet but not abrasive, like sandpaper.

I suppose if there were a simple solution some surfboard company would have patented it long ago but I had to throw it out there to see what The Knowledge has to offer.

Thanks
